Victor Hugo wrote an excellent book called "Notre dame de Paris", which is a very good book and much maligned by people who have only seen the cartoon / film. He also wrote "Les Miserables", which is one of my favorites, except for the fact that the "hero", who lives happily ever after, is a bit of a jerk.
